The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework is used to identify the knowledge teachers need to teach effectively with technology. There are seven components to TPACK with three primary realms of knowledge: Content (PK), Pedogogy (PK), and Technology (TK). Within the intersections of these three overlapping realms are additional knowledge areas: Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), Technological Content Knowledge (TCK), Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK), and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge. Technology should not be viewed as separate knowledge but should be integrated into existing content and pedagogy within educational classrooms. The TPACK framework is beneficial for use within varying contexts (Mkoehler, 2012).

Context:

The TPACK framework aligns with Cache High School's technology initiatives. The school's online Technology Integration Policies outline the use of Chromebooks and Google Classroom as the core LMS. The integration of these technological tools supports the TPACK framework by enabling teachers to utilize digital resources in their content and pedagogy knowledge. TPACK encourages educators not to use technology in an isolated environment. Cache High School promotes the use of technology as a part of the daily activities within each of the classrooms. Teachers develop lesson plans that incorporate Chromebooks for research and online assignments in unity with the selected integration model (Technology Learning Resources, n.d.).


Relevance:

The TPACK framework is a very relevant model for all forms of education, including adult education. The framework better enhances education through the integration of technology, which provides improved teaching and learning. The intersection of technology and pedagogy with content allows educators to engage students in the learning process instead of simply using technology because of its availability. This closely aligns with Cache Public Schools' goal of preparing students for their futures in a digital world. Current perspectives are addressed by stressing the importance of teachers who utilize content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and technology use simultaneously. The framework aligns with the district's integration of technology and enhances student learning pedagogically in a content-driven manner.


ISTE Alignment:

The TPACK framework aligns closely with the ISTE Student Standards. The Empowered Learner and Knowledge Constructor standards align with the TPACK framework in that it stresses the importance of the integration of technology with an understanding of pedagogy and content. Like the ISTE Standards, TPACK also emphasizes the active role of learning through the use of technology. The Innovative Designer and Digital Citizen standards also align with TPACK's emphasis on problem-solving skills and responsible technology uses. Cache High School's teachers develop lesson plans covering specific subject matter while integrating technology to promote critical thinking and digital literacy, which aligns with ISTE standards (ISTE Standards, 2024).


The ISTE Educator Standards also closely align with the TPACK framework. The Facilitator standard aligns with the framework by allowing educators to facilitate learning through technology and providing a deeper understanding of the content. The Designer standard is emphasized through educators using the TPACK framework in designing environments that integrate technology and engage students through the intersection of pedagogy, content, and technology (ISTE Standards, 2024). 


Evaluation:

The school district employs an Educational Technology educator to maintain an active database of technology use throughout the Cache Public Schools. Technology surveys and assessments provide data to determine the success of the TPACK framework. The framework works well with the evaluation tools established by the ET educator. Measurements are validated to determine the success of technology integration into pedagogy and content for teacher evaluations throughout the school year. Leveraging technology to enhance educational subject matter is emphasized with ideas for student engagement and integration.


The TPACK framework is an appropriate model for CHS and has proven itself with the current technology policies, ISTE Standards, and the school's assessment tools.

  1. This is a great perspective. Does your school use other forms of technology beyond Chromebooks? I'm curious what other types of technology is incorporated (curriculum, supplements, digital manipulatives, etc). Also, does your Technology Educator help teachers learn how to use the technology, or does the roll tend to be more of analyzing what is working and what is not?

  2. It appears through your research that the school district has done its due diligence in ensuring that the framework is in place for educators and students. I think having a Educational Technology educator who maintains an active database is also a key to success in the district. TPACK when implemented works as we can see here in your report. This is such a productive take on integrated technology within the classroom. Utilizing technology to add to the content is such a great way to increase learning. Your blog so clearly explains how the TPACK Model can be used to connect technology to learning by seeing the overlaps and explaining how technology and learning work together.
